Before you go

  • Check the forecast and local warnings. Fog is common in some valleys and near water at dawn.
  • Delay or shorten the ride if you can. A short wait often lets fog lift.
  • Clean the visor inside and out, and use an anti-fog insert or treatment if you have one.
  • Wear bright or reflective clothing so that other drivers see you earlier.

On the road

  • Ride slowly enough to stop within the distance you can see. In dense fog that can be very slow.
  • Leave a much bigger gap to the vehicle in front. Do not follow the tail lights too closely, because they can pull you along faster than is safe.
  • Use your low-beam headlight, and the hazard or fog lights if your bike has them and the local rules allow. High beam reflects off fog and makes it harder to see.
  • Keep your inputs smooth, because fog usually means damp and slippery roads.
  • Listen as well as look, and watch the road edge or markings for guidance.

When to stop

If visibility is too low to ride safely, find a safe place to wait. Pull well off the road, away from traffic, switch on your hazard lights if appropriate and wait until it clears. Stopping in the lane is dangerous because someone may not see you in time.

Rules on fog lights and hazard lights differ between countries. Check the rules where you ride.
