New rider
Build the right foundation before the road
Before every ride, check tire pressure and wear, brakes, lights, signals and fluid levels. NHTSA
Learn the controls and practise starts, stops, slow turns and emergency braking away from traffic. MSF
Fit your helmet to your head shape: it should feel evenly snug and should not move when you shake your head. NHTSA
Start with hands-on rider training and safety-oriented street strategies before riding independently. MSF
Safe riding
See early and keep room to react
Ride as if drivers have not seen you; avoid blind spots and always preserve an escape path. MSF
Leave plenty of space, check behind and signal before every lane change. NHTSA
Wear a compliant helmet, eye protection, riding jacket, pants, gloves and over-ankle boots. NHTSA
Keep searching the road, evaluate each hazard and execute early instead of reacting late. MSF · SEE

Advanced riding
Precision and control without extra risk
Practise controlled and emergency stops away from traffic, using both brakes effectively. DVSA
Develop a planned riding system: hazard awareness, positioning, appropriate speed and overtaking decisions. DVSA
Practise advanced cornering and braking only in a controlled environment with qualified instruction. DVSA
Corner within your skill limits and preserve room to correct; aggressive cornering increases risk. MSF
Refresh advanced skills through training that covers bends, braking, overtaking and filtering. DVSA
Motorcycle care
Quick checks that prevent faults and support safe riding
Check pressure with cold tires, plus tread depth, cracks, bulges and embedded objects. NHTSA
Before riding, test both brakes, lights, indicators and horn, and inspect fluid levels. NHTSA
Inspect the chain for wear, correct tension and rear-wheel alignment; lubricate and adjust it to the owner manual. DVSA
Look under the motorcycle for signs of oil or fuel leaks before setting off. NHTSA
Follow the manufacturer manual for servicing, tire pressure and chain adjustment; use a qualified workshop when unsure. DVSA
