A quick light check
- Switch on the ignition and check the low beam, high beam and position light.
- Press both brake levers and the foot pedal and check that the brake light comes on, ideally with a reflection in a wall or window.
- Test all four indicators, and check that they flash at a normal speed. A fast flash usually means a failed bulb.
- Check the number plate light and the reflectors.
Replacing a bulb
- Use the exact type and rating listed in the manual.
- Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers. Skin oil shortens its life.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for indicators if one has failed, and check the connector for corrosion.
- If a bulb keeps failing, look for a loose connection, vibration or a charging problem.
Headlight aim
A headlight pointing too high dazzles other drivers and one pointing too low shortens your view. Aim is affected by luggage and a passenger, and many bikes have an adjuster. Check it against a wall at night.
LED and aftermarket upgrades
A brighter bulb is not always better. Fitting an LED bulb into a lamp designed for halogen can scatter light and dazzle others, and may not be legal where you ride. Choose parts approved for your bike, and check the local rules.
Keep them clean
Dirt and dead insects reduce the output. Wipe the lenses when you wash the bike. See washing your motorcycle and night riding.
Include a quick light check in your pre-ride check.
