Check the licence rules

Licence categories, age limits and tests differ by country. Check the requirements with the official authorities before you buy a bike, because they can limit the size and power you may ride.

Take a course

  • A recognised rider course teaches the basics in a controlled place, with an instructor and often a bike you can borrow.
  • It is the best way to learn clutch control, braking, slow-speed handling and emergency stops without the pressure of traffic.
  • Many places run beginner courses, and some require one before the licence test.

Gear first

Buy a good helmet that fits, gloves, a jacket with armour, trousers and boots before the first ride. See the protective gear guide.

Practise in a safe place

  • Use an empty car park or private training area for the basics. Practise starting, stopping, turning and slow control.
  • Repeat the same drills until they feel natural. See the practice drills.
  • Move to quiet roads only when you feel in control, and avoid busy traffic and bad weather at first.

Choose a suitable bike

A light, manageable bike with modest power is easier to learn on. See choosing your first motorcycle.

Keep learning

Riding is a skill you keep building. Ride with more experienced people, take an advanced course later, and be honest about what you can handle.
