What a GPX file is

A GPX file is a small text file with location data. It can hold a planned route, a recorded track and waypoints such as fuel stops, viewpoints and meeting points. Many apps and devices can read and write it.

Routes, tracks and waypoints

  • Route: a planned line from point to point, to be followed with navigation.
  • Track: the recorded path of a ride, with the points you actually passed.
  • Waypoint: a single marked place, such as a petrol station or a café.

Why riders use it

  • Share a route with friends so everyone rides the same one.
  • Move a route between apps, or from a computer to a phone.
  • Keep a backup of a favourite ride, or reuse it later.

Import and export

In a route planner you can usually import a GPX file to see the route on the map, and export your own route to send to others. After importing, check that the whole route displays correctly and that the order of the points is right.

Check before you ride

  • Look at the route on the map. A route someone else made may include roads that are closed, unpaved or unsuitable for your bike.
  • Check the length, fuel stops and how long it will take.
  • Download offline maps. See offline maps for motorcyclists.

Roads and conditions change. Use a shared route as a plan, and judge the conditions yourself.
