Choose the right way to move it
- A motorcycle trailer or a van with a ramp and anchor points is the safest option.
- A professional transporter is worth considering for long distances.
- Avoid improvised ramps. A steep, slippery or narrow ramp is a common cause of falls.
Before loading
- Check that the fuel tap is off if the bike has one, and that nothing leaks.
- Remove loose luggage, and fold mirrors if you can.
- Check your documents and insurance cover for transport.
- Have a second person to help, and wear gloves and boots.
Loading
Walk the bike up the ramp with the engine running in first gear, or push it with help. Keep your weight centred, move steadily and avoid stopping halfway. Place the front wheel against a chock or stop if there is one.
Securing the bike
- Use at least four good ratchet straps with soft loops, attached to solid points such as the frame or triple tree, not to plastic parts.
- Pull the straps in pairs from the front so the suspension compresses by about a third and stays that way.
- Keep the bike upright, with the straps pulling slightly outward, not straight down.
- Recheck the straps after the first few kilometres.
Unloading
Undo the straps carefully, one pair at a time, while someone holds the bike upright. Then roll it down slowly in neutral with the engine off, or with help.
Never leave the bike on the side stand on a moving trailer. It must be upright and fully strapped.
