Use more than one lock
- A hardened chain or a U-lock, a disc lock and the steering lock work together, and each one takes the thief more time.
- Lock through the frame or a solid part, and not through the wheel or the plastics only.
- Keep the lock off the ground and short of slack, so it is hard to attack with tools.
Anchor the bike
Lock the bike to something fixed, like a ground anchor, a strong post or a railing, so it cannot be lifted into a van. At home, a ground anchor set in concrete is worth the effort.
Park smartly
- Choose well-lit, busy places that other people and cameras can see, and park the bike close to other bikes, if you can.
- At night, prefer a locked garage or a secure parking area.
- Do not leave the bike in the same remote spot for long periods.
Add alarms and trackers
An audible alarm, an immobiliser and a GPS tracker add to your protection and can help to recover the bike. Hide the tracker well, and check that your insurer accepts the security you have.
Keep records
- Photos of the bike from all sides, and of any special marks.
- The frame (VIN) number, the engine number and the registration documents, stored somewhere other than the bike.
- The details of your insurance and the number to call after a theft.
If it is stolen
Report it to the police straight away and give them the registration and frame numbers and the photos. Tell your insurer, and let the local riding community know, as well. Do not try to recover it yourself.
