Warming up
- Start the engine and let it settle to a steady idle, usually within 30 seconds to a minute in mild weather.
- Then ride gently, keeping the revs low and avoiding hard acceleration until the engine reaches its normal temperature.
- In cold weather, allow a little more time. Do not leave the bike idling for a long time, as this wastes fuel and is not the best way to warm it.
- Check the manual, because some engines and fuel systems have their own advice.
Riding at the right pace
Watch the temperature gauge or the light on liquid-cooled bikes. On air-cooled bikes, the oil and engine warm more slowly, so stay gentle for longer.
Cooling down
- After a hard ride or a long climb, ride the last section gently so the engine and brakes cool gradually.
- Liquid-cooled bikes may run the fan after you stop. This is normal.
- Do not wash a hot engine or hot brakes with cold water.
Hot weather and traffic
Avoid idling in slow traffic for long periods in hot weather. If the temperature rises, find a shady, safe place to stop and let the engine cool. See riding in the heat, cold weather riding and coolant care.
Never open a hot radiator cap. Wait until the engine has cooled completely.
