Start from your own bike

Look at the fasteners on your bike and choose tools that fit them. The tools supplied under the seat are a starting point, but are often poor quality. Check what you actually need on the bike in your garage.

A sensible basic kit

  • Metric or imperial spanners and a set of hex keys that fit your bike, plus a small socket set with an extension.
  • Screwdrivers with a few bits, including a Torx if your bike uses it.
  • Pliers and a small adjustable spanner.
  • A tyre pressure gauge and a compact pump or inflator.
  • A puncture repair kit for your tyre type, and tyre levers if you can use them.
  • Cable ties, insulating tape, spare fuses and a few bulbs.
  • A small torch or head torch, and gloves.

Extras for longer trips

  • Spare clutch and brake levers, or a spare key.
  • Chain lube, a master link and a chain tool if you ride a chain bike.
  • A towing strap, a small first aid kit and a rain cover.

Know your limits

Practise using the kit at home. Repairs that involve brakes, fuel, or the engine internals are best left to a workshop. See the breakdown checklist and the first aid kit.

Carry the kit where it will not shift or rattle, and check it before every long trip.
