Licence

Check whether your licence is accepted in each country you will ride in, and whether you need an international driving permit or a translation. Make sure your licence category covers the bike you will ride.

Vehicle papers and insurance

  • Carry the registration document and proof of ownership, or written permission if the bike is not yours.
  • Check that your insurance is valid in every country on the route, and whether you need extra cover or an international certificate.
  • Ask about breakdown assistance and medical cover abroad.

Local rules

  • Speed limits, helmet rules, lights-on rules and the legal blood alcohol limit differ between countries.
  • Some places require high-visibility clothing, a spare bulb kit or other items.
  • Check tolls, vignettes and low-emission zones before you enter.
  • Check the rules on carrying a passenger and on filtering between lanes.

Border and ferry crossings

Keep your passport, vehicle papers and insurance within reach. Check entry requirements, and plan extra time and a margin for queues. See the documents checklist and planning a road trip.

Save copies

Keep digital copies of your documents in a safe place that you can reach offline, and write down emergency numbers for each country.

Rules change. Confirm them with the official authorities of each country close to your departure date.
